Retro Parade In Bollywood

Bollywood industry seems to be smitten by the 70’s era. The now-a-days dressing style and make up trends especially the eye make up, the music and yes! Also the Lambretta scooty bring back the memories of the golden era.

From ad gurus to fashion designers and musicians, everyone seem to be adopting the retro trend. This trend is the symbol of the rebellious youth spirit of the 70’s.

Lately Ekta Kapoor’s film ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’ has become the talk of the town because of its story which is based on the underworld dons and mainly because of the costumes. The stars of this film will be seen in a complete 70’s look especially Kangana Ranaut and Prachi Desai. The make up artists of this film have worked a lot on Kangana Ranaut’s looks which are inspired by yesteryear actress Madhubala’s looks. It seems an amount of about 20 lakhs is only spent on the wigs which will be used for Kangana’s make over. Even Prachi Desai’s looks are inspired by Dimple Kapadia’s looks in Bobby.

Vipul Shah’s ‘Action Replay’ starring Akshay Kumar and Bachchan Bahu Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has also been in news as Aishwarya and Akshay are giving a tribute to the hit jodi’s of the 70’s

Evergreen actor and director Dev Anand is also planning to remake ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ and Rohan Sippy is planning to remix the song ‘Dum Maro Dum’ in his next film starring Abhishek Bachchan.

Even Kainaat Arora does a Dimple Kapadia in a song from the film ‘Khatta Meetha’. Her attire is similar to Dimple Kapadia’s attire in the song ‘Jhooth bole kawa kate’ from the film Bobby. Madhur Bhandarkar film ‘Heroine’ starring Kareena Kapoor also will be based on the actresses of the 60’s and 70’s

Earlier also some movies have adopted the retro style. Ekta Kapoor’s first film ‘Kucch Toh Hai’ also had a song in which Esha Deol and Tusshar Kapoor were seen in a retro style attire. Farah Khan’s film ‘Om Shanti Om’ starring Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone had completely recreated the 70’s magic on screen. The song ‘Hum hain rahi pyaar ke phir milenge chalte chalte’ from the film ‘Rab ne banadi jodi’ also had the same retro flavor to it.

Even the remix of the song ‘Chod do aanchal’ by Bombay Vikings showed the 70’s style of fashion and romance. And the list will go on and on.

The styles, music, charm of that era has continued to be the part of the trend of every generation. This shows that the retro trend can never die as it gets recreated in some or the other manner. But does this mean that bollywood has run out of ideas or this is just another way of connecting with the audience.

Look who has made his way to the famous wax museum Madame Tussauds. He is none other than the heartthrob with the Greek God looks Hrithik Roshan

After bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan will be the fifth bollywood star whose wax statue will be installed at the prestigious museum.

Roshan who started his career with his dad Rakesh Roshan’s film ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’ has completed a decade in the film industry and is the first from the Roshan family to make his way at 200 year old tourist fixation.

Daddy, Rakesh Roshan’s happiness has no bounds after the family received an official letter 3 days back from the museum.

From Choreography To Direction

Since the era of Bollywood films started there was no such profession called choreography. The directors themselves would direct the songs according to the script or the lyrics of the song. Later choreography was recognized and thus became a well-defined career. Choreography and direction always goes hand in hand and thus probably a lot of choreographers have been taking up film direction projects.

The latest in this list is none other than Shaimak Davar. As a choreographer Shaimak made his debut with Yash Raj banner’s ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’ and now all set to direct his first film which will be called ‘A Slumdog Millionaire Goes Dancing’. Oh no! it’s not a sequel to Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionnaire’. Shaimak always wanted to make a film which is based on dancing and thus his film will revolve around a bunch of slum children who are trained to participate in a dance competition.

Earlier also some of the choreographers went behind the camera to experiment their direction skills. When we think of a Choreographer turned Director, the first name which comes to our mind is the one who has choreographed more than 100 songs in over 80 hindi films, Farah Khan. Farah Khan started her career as a choreographer with the film ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander’. She made her debut as a director with the film ‘Main Hoon Naa’ starring Shahrukh Khan which was well praised by the bollywood critics. She later directed ‘Om Shanti Om’ again with Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.

Ahmed Khan is the one who brought the grace in Urmila Matondkar’s dance moves in the film Rangeela. Then films like Satya, Ishq Vishk and Salaam Namaste and Kaminey showed his versatility as a Choreographer. He started his career as a director with the film ‘Lakeer’ and later he directed ‘Fool N Final’ but both the film did not gain much popularity at the box-office.

Prabhu Deva, the one who is known as rubber body because of his dance moves and has choreographer for more than 100 movies including south and bollywood films. His dance moves emerged him as an actor as well. With the film ‘Wanted’ starring Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia Azmi Prabhu Deva emerged as a director. The film worked really well at the box-office leaving ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ behind which released on the same day.

From Big B to Hrithik Roshan, Ganesh Acharya has made everyone dance on his tunes. Ganesh Acharya may be obese but has tremendous energy and sets the dance floor on fire with his amazing moves. He started his career as a Choreographer in the year 1992. With ‘Swami’ Ganesh emerged as a Director. He later directed ‘Money Hai Toh Honey Hai’ but both the film did not do great business at the box-office

Ramesh Gopi who is more popular is Remo D’Souza started his career as a Choreographer by assisting choreographer Ahmed Khan. He started choreographing independently with Sonu Nigam’s album ‘Deewana’. With ‘Kaante’ Remo became more popular as a choreographer. With Bengali film ‘Lal Paharer Katha’ he made his debut as a director. He is all set to make his debut in Bollywood with the film titled as ‘Faltu’

So these are some of the choreographers who went behind the camera to direct a film but only a few of them proved themselves to be good directors as well

Forgotten Directors Of Bollywood

Now-a-days we have a lot of directors who are making debut in the film industry with a lot of new concepts and technique which appeal all the age groups.

Punit Malhotra is the latest on the list with his fresh new concept in the film ‘I hate love storys’. The film is a big hit at the box office and the director’s debut direction is also appreciated by a lot of bollywood film critics

But there are some directors who absolutely disappeared after they made their debut in the industry and yes! Their films worked really well at the box office. Lets take a look at some of these directors.

Saket Chaudhary made his debut with the film ‘Pyaar ke side effects’. The film was more in news because of the odd pair Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose. But Saket managed to hit the jackpot at the box office and was also critically appreciated. But its been 3 and a half years now since he is not in picture

Homi Adajania made his debut with the film ‘Being Cyrus’ starring Saif Ali Khan. The film psychological drama revolving around a Parsi family. The film was appreciated for its cinematography and camera angels. Its been four years now but Homi Adajania has not yet come up with any new concept...he’s probably still thinking to do something new

Reema Kagti’s debut direction Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd had a lot of actors acting in it, the film had great script except for the superhero concept of Abhay Deol and Minissha Lamba but Abhay Deol’s acting covered it all. Inspite of all this Reema has not come up with her second film

Nishikant Kamat was in headlines because of his Marathi film ‘Dombivali Fast’. It was only then that UTV signed him to make Mumbai Meri Jaan and this is how he made his debut in the hindi film industry. This film was based on the 7/11 train blasts in Mumbai. Nishikant Kamat was praised for make such a sensitive film. But the film industry is still waiting for his second film

Neeraj Pandey made his debut with the film ‘A Wednesday’. The film had a very strong scripts which made you hold on to your seats till the end. The film showed how a common man went out of his way to prove his point after the 7/11 serial blasts. The film was loved and praised by all the age groups. Pandey did sign a lot of films but yet no sign of him.

So these are some of the directors whose first films gained popularity but since then there has been no sign them. The film industry is eagerly waiting for some more fresh concepts from these directors.

Mahi's Filmy Affairs

Mahendra Singh dhoni’s ‘chat mangni pat byaah’ has put a full stop to all the speculations made about his romantic relationships in the media.

Mahi was mostly paired with a lot of actresses from the film industry. Lets take a look at those actresses with whom Mahi was paired.

First he was mostly paired with Lakshmi Rai who works in Malayalam and Tamil films. He was paired with her as soon as he entered the cricket squad. They both were caught spending a lot of time together but he never really confirmed on those reports.

Then Deepika Padukone came in the picture when she was about to make her debut in the film ‘Om shanti Om’. Deepika Padukone spent a lot of time him during the T20 world cup in 2007 and had also invited him for the premiere show of Om Shanti Om but later both denied the reports by calling eachother ‘Just Friends’ like all the other celebrity couples.

The recent in the list was the Bollywood actress who made her debut with Ghajini and the one who has London dreams, Asin Thottumkal. After Mahi’s team Chennai Superkings won the IPL he paid a visit at Asin’s Navi Mumbai house which gave rise to the rumours about them.
But now Mahi has now married Sakshi Rawat who is a Hotel Management student, who recently finished with her training at the Taj Bengal’s front office. So all the rumours about his relationship with the ladies above have been proved false. And am sure with this move Mahi has broken the hearts of a lot of his female fans including me!

But anyways now that he is married can’t do much about it! I Hope he leads a successful married life.
